Links to save for calligraphy class
I find I'm spending much time on my Typography Class blog and am finding things I want to share with the class but it's not time yet. I'm trying to not overwhelm them. So here is a place to store things for the class.

January Reorganizing
Maybe it's taxes, or staying inside in the winter or the beginning of the year or the seasons, but January always seems a time to reorganize. Because I'm thinking more about how I spend my time and making sane, healthy choices, I'm stopping by this blog to access my progress.
So far have learned more about blogging. My blog I started for my class is up and running. It's working fairly well. I find it to have less busywork and more real interaction and learning. Score one for a good activity.
My diet and exercise plan are getting back in order. I like www.sparkpeople.com for following diet and exercise program. Lot's of good suggestions on that site and, while I don't do it perfectly, it does make me more aware of the decisions I make. Score Two for good activity.
Next thing I want in order is winter training for the horse. Need to finish up a few toys and set up my "command center" at home to keep me on track. Right now all my training stuff is scattered throughout my house.
Which brings me to the monkey on my back - Paperwork and cleaning. They are wild beasts in my life! I have to have lot's of energy to tackle them. If I get my teacher work done today, I'll have a whole day tomorrow to make a dent here. Off to teacherland.

Keep Learning New Things
| My First Camel Ride |
There are things I've not done that are on my To Do List. Sometimes it's because the opportunity hasn't presented itself or sometimes because it has and I missed it. Riding a camel and an elephant were two past opportunities I missed due to time constraints. I was always sorry. So, when they came to my local fair I didn't let the opportunity go again. While it wasn't in a far away, exotic dessert, at least I was able to give it a go.
| My First Elephant Ride |
The elephant was very comfortable, sort of ambling and rocking. The camel wasn't bad either tho' I have to say, if I were riding for a long time I'd opt for a saddle of some kind. I just heard Ohio banned ownership of exotic animals except for zoos where they could be cared for properly. That's probably good or I might go looking for an elephant to cruise around on.
And, my slightly ulterior motive for this post, I know know how to insert pictures with some formatting too.
Learning Curve
I'm learning how to use Blogger to a greater extent. I'm using it for a class discussion group.
So far so good. All students in my first class were able to access the blog. None of them were bloggers either. It will be trial by fire for the class blog. We'll all be learning together.
I wasn't interested in blogging for a long time because who needs one more time consuming thing to do. While I'm glad you had salad for lunch I don't really want to know every detail of your life so I thought of blogging as a waste of time. Then I found a few blogs with really good content that I wanted to read more because they were edifying. Hmmmmm. It's like every other tool. What you put in it and how you use it is what counts.
Now I use it for class. I have immediate response from students... no waiting a week for a paper, then grading it and returning it another week later. My first response was from someone who never blogged and it was great. I responded immediately. No more 2 week lag. I know what interested the students. They were able to interact immediately. It helps me know thing they want to learn.

About making choices
Making choices seems to be more limiting by the increasing number of choices. At a certain point, I say enough already and pick one that has been successful in the past. There is a lack of focus within me and around me I find distracting. It makes it difficult to carry out my choices.
Today I listened to a talk about choice which helped my thought process immensely. I feel refocused. Sheena Iyengar, a researcher from Columbia U., shares valuable insights on choice:
Feeling out of focus and overwhelmed is a remediable situation, Thank God. Her comments from about 16 minutes on are summation of managing choice. My favorite comment is "this is something inventors, artists and musicians have known for years. My solutions have made sense.
